Lightshine Recap - Copied from the Server

Shining a Light in our City

A group of our students just completed LightShine, an annual service project in which they partner with other ministries and organizations to serve our city.  We are so grateful for the work that the students did in the name of God and the impact it had on those they served.  We are also grateful for the impact LightShine had on the students themselves.  We asked some students about this and here are their responses.

“I learned that even though some people only have bad thoughts about Memphis, these are so many good places here that are so welcoming, like Caritas.”  -Avery Efaw

“Because of working at LightShine, I will look at people differently now.”  -Clayton Sharp

“God is everywhere.  We don’t bring God to the places we serve.  We are just furthering His mission.  He is already there.”  -Melissa Jacobs

“At LightShine I was reminded how much I love mission work and how amazing it feels to help others.”  -Avery Walker

Join us in praying that both the impact on those served and on our students will continue for many years to come to the glory of God.

2013 Jr. High Camp Info

What do we need to give to Sarah or George before we leave for camp?
  • We need to have a medical release form (the blue form) and the camp form found in the brochure. If you have not yet turned in any forms we will enclose them in this envelope. Please go ahead and mail or turn these in.
  • If you have not already paid you need to do so immediately.
When will we leave for camp?
  • The chartered bus will leave the church parking lot at 8am on Sunday morning the 21st. Please be to the church by 7:30am.
  • Corps will leave by van Saturday morning the 20th. We will be in contact with more information.
Do I need any money for camp?
  • Yes, we will stop for lunch on the way to camp and on the way home at a fast food restaurant.
  • No other money is needed. Canteen is provided twice a day for snacks/drinks at no charge.
How can my parents reach me if they need me while at camp?
  • George will have his cell phone with him in case of emergency, it will work in most places around camp, but he might have to call you back.  (901) 596-9974
What should I pack for camp?
  • Bible, notebook, pen
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Sleeping bag and/or sheets/blankets
  • Pillow
  • Shorts and t-shirts
  • Swimsuit
  • Toiletries
  • Rain jacket (optional)
  • Bath towels/washcloths for showers (at least 2), will need a towel at the pool too.
  • Shower accessories (soap, deodorant, shampoo, shower shoes, etc)
  • Creek hiking shoes are a must! Old tennis shoes are great for this.
  • Long sleeve t-shirt for cooler nights
  • Dark clothes that can get dirty for capture the flag
  • Clothes that can get messy during water war on Friday
  • Insect spray
  • Camera (optional)
  • Shaving cream for Friday’s water war
  • Large garbage bag for wet and yucky clothes to bring home (be sure to label it beforehand!)
  • Flip flops for shower
What should I not pack for camp?
  • No electronic devices are to be used on the bus or outside of the cabin. We want to grow as a group and learn about each other while learning more about God and these items can be a distraction. If you choose to bring an mp3 player or cell phone we have NO way of guaranteeing the security of these items.
  • Personal video game systems are not permitted at camp.
  • Drugs, alcohol and weapons are strictly prohibited and will result in being sent home at your parents’ expense.
What is the dress code for camp?
  • Girls should bring a modest one-piece swimsuit or a tankini that overlaps completely (no deep v-necks). A bikini with a t-shirt over it is not permissible.
  • Girls’ shirts should not be low-cut. If sleeveless, the band/straps should be more than one-inch wide with no bra straps showing. When you raise your arms you should not be able to see your stomach. When you bend down, you should not be able to see your underwear.
  • All shorts should be modest. We realize that it is difficult for some girls to find longer shorts. So, here is the compromise: shorts must be modest and come to at least mid-thigh. They need to be consistently mid-thigh on all sides, not just in the front and back. This means no “Nike shorts”. We will be enforcing this rule, so don’t even bring them.
  • We should not be able to see your underwear at any time – from the top or the bottom. (girls and guys)
  • Guys and girls should not wear white ribbed sleeveless undershirts or t-shirts with the sides cut out.
What if I need medicine while I’m away?
  • We will have 4 nurses/emts going with us to camp. Jamie and Amy Clements, Kim Sharp and Annette Wheless will take good care of our campers.
  • Any medications need to be checked in with them the morning we leave for camp with full instructions.
  • The camp will have a first aid supply kit for minor treatments.
